DRC Ebola Crisis Spreads Rapidly Across Multiple Provinces, Urging Urgent Global Response

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has called for swift international intervention as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo expands into six provinces. Fletcher highlighted that the epidemic is advancing more quickly than previous Ebola outbreaks. He appealed to governments and donors to boost funding and ensure access for humanitarian efforts. This appeal coincides with rising infection rates, security challenges, and immense pressure on health services in eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

On September 1, the World Health Organization announced that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. Currently, 60 health zones in Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo are affected. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded and the fastest spread to date, with Ituri remaining the primary transmission hub, accounting for most cases since the outbreak’s onset.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus and was first identified in May 2026. WHO maintains that this remains a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the agency reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals exceeding 6,000 shortly after. By that date, 1,293 recoveries had been documented. Efforts continue across affected regions, including surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical care, and community engagement.

Conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola containment

The Ebola crisis unfolds amid a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher noted that nearly 11 million people require aid due to ongoing conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern DRC has hampered access for health and relief teams. Since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its response, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field efforts.

Frontline healthcare workers face significant risks, with Fletcher stating that over 40 health workers have lost their lives to Ebola. Attacks on treatment centers and ambulances have also occurred. WHO data as of July 30 revealed 151 confirmed infections among health and care staff, including 44 deaths. Health agencies emphasize infection prevention, safe clinical practices, and stronger protections for responders. Ongoing challenges include unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside treatment facilities, complicating containment efforts.

Funding and vaccine development efforts increase amid rising cases

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the DRC calls for $2.1 billion, with $300 million allocated for Ebola-specific activities. Fletcher urged for more flexible and increased international funding to support both the outbreak response and broader humanitarian efforts. WHO also states that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization has asked member states to accelerate contributions as authorities enhance surveillance, treatment, laboratory capabilities, community outreach, and other public health measures.

On September 1, WHO published new guidance on Ebola vaccines, as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency indicated that current evidence is insufficient to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this Ebola species in humans. It recommends administering the vaccine only within research protocols while additional clinical data are gathered. WHO and Africa CDC are supporting the Congolese government’s efforts, which focus on identifying cases, halting transmission, and safeguarding communities across the six impacted provinces.
