European Union Allocates €2.3 Million to Combat Cholera in West and Central Africa

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – European Commission has committed €2.3 million in urgent humanitarian aid to address cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. The funds will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials explained that the financial support will be used for treatment efforts, disease surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a rise in cholera cases across multiple African nations in 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a significant spike mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will receive the largest portion, totaling €1.5 million, which will enhance response teams and provide cholera treatment kits and other vital supplies. Part of the assistance will go toward improving water treatment at public points and household levels. Authorities will also use some of the funds to bolster disease monitoring in remote regions. The program additionally encompasses case management, risk communication, and community outreach as health teams work to contain the spread of the disease within affected communities.

World Health Organization data up to June 28 reveal 90,049 cholera cases reported across 18 African countries, with 1,528 deaths. Nigeria alone recorded 26,848 cases and 181 fatalities during that period. In June, Nigeria reported 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO highlighted that Borno State was responsible for over 95% of Nigeria’s cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected locations.

Funds Focus on Treatment, Water, and Disease Surveillance

European Commission will provide €500,000 to the Central African Republic for case management, vaccination efforts, and water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. The support aims to improve disease detection, surveillance, and community involvement, including safe and respectful burials when necessary. WHO reports 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The EU described this aid as part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks in these four nations.

Cameroon will get €100,000 to strengthen outbreak control and patient care in impacted villages. Funds will support additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment facilities, and oral rehydration points. WHO data show 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon up to June 28. Chad will receive €200,000 to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene measures, along with supporting community surveillance and case management. During the same period, Chad reported 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s Outbreak Drives Regional Surge in Cases

WHO states that 12 African countries saw 27,954 new cholera cases in June, marking a 95% increase from May, along with 284 deaths. Nigeria reported the highest number of new infections, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The rise in Nigeria is mainly attributed to the spike in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and heavy rainfall have heightened transmission risks.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe cases can lead to rapid dehydration and require immediate treatment. The EU’s funding aims to disrupt transmission pathways and enhance healthcare access in affected regions. The total aid for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, focusing on treatment capacity, disease surveillance, vaccination where suitable, safer water supplies, sanitation, and community outreach during the ongoing outbreak response.
