This satellite aims to identify and examine disruptions affecting worldwide navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. The planned launch is set for February 2027, utilizing a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative centers on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from orbit, as well as collecting data on when and where navigation signals are hindered.

Serving as a technology demonstrator, BEACONSAT is part of an extensive multi-year research and development program. Jamming refers to radio interference that impairs satellite navigation signals, while spoofing involves transmitting false information to mislead receivers about their location. These navigation services are vital for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency responders, and various systems. Austria’s Defense Ministry anticipates that the data gathered will bolster operational capabilities and deepen understanding of GNSS interference issues.
Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology firm responsible for overall mission management. Founded in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, GATE Space specializes in chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. They provide the propulsion hardware, satellite structure, and thermal control technology for BEACONSAT. The company has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian Technologies Power the Satellite Initiative
Several European companies contribute essential systems to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology for precise detection and analysis of GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial hardware with systems designed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space via Austria Wirtschaftsservice, with funding of approximately 750,000 euros.
The European Space Agency assists and co-funds the project through its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space technologies for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT primarily as a demonstrator rather than a fully operational satellite. Its main role is to collect orbit-based interference data to inform Defence Ministry initiatives as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT as Part of Austria’s Expanding Space Efforts
The Austrian Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated space services division that covers satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT fits into this expanding framework, focusing on interference detection.
