Major Wildfire Forces Emergency Response Across Lower Austria Near St. Egyden

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities managing emergencies in Lower Austria issued immediate evacuation mandates on Friday following a rapidly spreading forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland close to St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Local officials confirmed that a significant wildfire threatened St. Egyden in Austria, with fierce flames encroaching within 50 meters of residential zones, prompting the highest alert level, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized evacuating residents along Bahnstraße and the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Coordination between municipal authorities and regional disaster response agencies led to the evacuation of at least 250 residents from danger zones. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden stated that emergency responders evacuated six homes on Bahnstraße and 50 units across five apartment buildings in Waldstrandsiedlung. Those displaced were taken to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian organizations provided crisis support and supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments in the Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt districts responded quickly. They worked alongside aerial containment teams, deploying five police helicopters, two private aircraft, and a Black Hawk helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross dispatched 44 emergency personnel and 21 vehicles to assist with evacuations and support the affected population.

Lower Austria Emergency Teams Activate Level B4 Fire Alert

This event marks the second major fire in the Föhrenwald area within two weeks, following an earlier 100-hectare forest fire that required a five-day suppression operation. Local officials confirmed the new fire started on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds spreading dense smoke across transportation routes. Authorities issued warnings advising drivers to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to keep routes clear for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that emergency teams established containment lines around the fire’s core to prevent further expansion. They also tackled smaller fires igniting spontaneously in nearby towns like Strelzhof and Netting. Strict operational hours were enforced to ensure ground crews did not work more than 12 hours consecutively during intense suppression efforts.

No Injuries Reported During Initial Emergency Operations, Say Medical Officials

Law enforcement investigators have begun initial assessments to identify the cause of the afternoon fire ignition. Authorities noted that the previous blaze in the same pine forest was caused by legacy WWII phosphorus ammunition buried underground. While a direct link has yet to be confirmed, environmental conditions in Lower Austria remain notably dry, raising wildfire risks across the region.

Emergency services continued active perimeter monitoring through Friday evening to safeguard nearby homes. Civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries occurred among residents or responders during the primary evacuation. Technical teams and forestry specialists plan to maintain perimeter stability and hot-spot suppression in the coming days.
