European Union Reports 37% Decrease in Irregular Border Crossings Through July 2026 Across Key Routes

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources indicate a 37% reduction in irregular border crossings into the EU during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex’s figures show roughly 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external borders from January 1 to July 31, compared to the same period in 2025. Most major migration pathways experienced fewer crossings, providing the latest insight into illegal entry activity at the EU’s external frontier.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the busiest route, with 20,232 detections—down 28% from 28,068 in the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean registered 16,454 detections, a 55% decline from 36,656, collectively accounting for about 60% of all detections across the EU. Libya continued to be the primary departure country on this route over the seven months.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw a 37% rise, with 11,217 detections compared to 8,175 last year. Sea crossings on this route increased to 8,648 from 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June reached 2,569, up from 1,079. Meanwhile, Western African detections fell sharply by 60% to 4,682. Crossings in the Western Balkans decreased by 26%, totaling 4,910, while Eastern Land Border crossings declined 44% to 3,209.

Med Routes Lead in EU Border Detection Trends

Separate data on Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom reveal a notable decline as well. Frontex recorded 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel figures are not included in the EU entry total. The agency also noted 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, an increase of 9%. The seven-month data exclude exceptional border events in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its analysis on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency indicated that future revisions may occur as authorities update the information. These figures represent detection counts, not unique individuals, meaning one person might be recorded multiple times after crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is significant when comparing route totals to the overall number of migrants involved.

Seven-Month Data Continues Downward Trend from First Half of 2026

The recent figures extend the decline observed after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings—also a 37% decrease year-on-year. During that period, detections along the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in 2025, but the latest seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase in that route. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and 60% through July.

Frontex reports that approximately 3,800 officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders, supporting national authorities with border management and life-saving operations at sea. The agency also assists member states in implementing EU rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reveal uneven route trends, with broad declines in most major corridors but a rise along the Western Mediterranean pathway.
