MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to official daily mortality data published by the Carlos III Health Institute, almost 2,150 individuals died from heat-related causes in Spain during August. The MoMo monitoring system recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme temperatures over the month, marking the second-highest August figure since the start of federal data collection in 2015. As persistent European heatwaves continue, seasonal mortality rates on the Iberian Peninsula reach historic levels, with nearly 2,150 heat-related deaths in August.

Spain records nearly 2150 heat-related deaths in August data
Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

The only August to surpass this figure was 2025, with 2,184 heat-related fatalities. Public health records show that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 lives were lost due to thermal stress, the highest summer mortality recorded by the national public health institute since tracking began, exceeding the previous peak of 4,652 in summer 2022. Authorities are currently assessing the systemic strain on regional emergency services caused by this surge.

Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that seniors faced the greatest risk during these heat events. Of the 2,149 deaths in August, 2,064 were individuals over 65, including 1,285 over 85. Gender-wise, 1,283 women and 866 men lost their lives. Medical experts highlight that sustained high temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory issues among vulnerable groups.

Spain’s August Heatwave Causes Nearly 2,150 Deaths, Regional Impact Noted

The northeastern region of Catalonia experienced the highest regional death toll with 1,164 fatalities in August. Valencia ranked second with 227, followed by Andalusia with 138 heat-related deaths. Regional health authorities ramped up community outreach and increased access to cooling centers, though extreme nighttime heat continued to impair recovery for many residents.

According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency AEMET, high thermal risk persists into early autumn. Forecasters report that an unusually hot September episode affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly exceeding seasonal norms. Climatologists note that across Europe, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, intense, and prolonged, aligning with global warming trends.

Over 1,000 Heat-Related Deaths Reported in Catalonia for August

National health agencies are collaborating with local authorities to strengthen preventive measures and monitor at-risk populations. Emergency medical teams have modified protocols to respond swiftly to heat-related health issues. Ongoing public health advisories urge citizens to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated amidst unseasonably warm atmospheric conditions.

Once September’s final surveillance data is available, officials will compile a comprehensive review of summer mortality. Experts emphasize that long-term improvements in urban infrastructure and public housing insulation are critical to safeguarding vulnerable communities from future extreme heat events. Final mortality figures will be accessible through official ministry portals to guide future health policies.
