Moscow remains silent on Trump’s claim of energy truce between Russia and Ukraine

WASHINGTON, DC / EuroWire / – U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement to cease hostilities against each other’s energy infrastructure. The president announced the so-called “energy ceasefire” on Sunday, claiming it would begin immediately. No details were provided regarding the terms, timeline, monitoring measures, or which facilities would be protected. By early Monday, Moscow had not issued any public confirmation of the deal. Ukraine indicated support for a reciprocal halt but was awaiting further information from the United States.

Trump energy ceasefire claim meets Moscow silence
Ukraine backs a reciprocal energy truce while Russia has yet to publicly confirm the plan.

Trump posted a brief message on his Truth Social platform, declaring that both sides had agreed and urging adherence to the agreement. The White House did not release a separate framework outlining how the ceasefire would be implemented. Similarly, the Kremlin had not issued any public statement confirming Russia’s participation. These omissions left the status of the ceasefire uncertain, relying solely on public statements from Trump and Ukrainian officials.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed support for the idea of an energy ceasefire but emphasized the need for it to be actualized. He stated that Ukraine was prepared to refrain from attacking Russian energy infrastructure if Russia demonstrated the same willingness. Zelenskyy also mentioned that Kyiv was waiting for clarification on discussions between Washington and Moscow, maintaining contact with U.S. officials while consulting European and NATO partners.

Ukraine reports energy strikes following the ceasefire announcement

Zelenskyy noted that Russian forces continued air assaults on Sunday after Trump’s declaration, including an attack on the CHP-5 combined heat and power plant in Kharkiv. Ukrainian officials confirmed the strike occurred after Trump’s statement. Zelenskyy also reported ongoing Russian drone and glide bomb activity over Ukraine during that day. His office highlighted that over the previous week, Russian forces launched more than 200 strikes targeting Ukrainian electricity generation and transmission facilities.

The Ukrainian president added that another 17 Russian strikes hit gas and oil infrastructure during the same period. Earlier Sunday, Zelenskyy declared Ukraine would cease attacking Russian refineries if Moscow halted strikes on Ukraine’s energy system. Trump had urged Kyiv to stop targeting Russian oil infrastructure before announcing the ceasefire. The statement came shortly after Trump revealed a U.S.-Russia diesel supply agreement on Friday amid rising global fuel prices.

Moscow has not officially responded to Trump’s energy ceasefire claim

In September, Trump previously claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed not to attack each other’s energy infrastructure, but neither side officially confirmed the agreement, and attacks persisted. The current declaration again centers on energy targets rather than a comprehensive ceasefire across the battlefield. Both Russia and Ukraine have continued long-range drone and missile operations, with energy facilities remaining frequent targets.

As of Monday, Moscow had not publicly acknowledged the latest energy ceasefire or clarified which facilities it would encompass. Ukraine expressed support for a mutual halt, stating its armed forces received instructions following Trump’s announcement. Zelenskyy indicated Kyiv expected Russia to honor the arrangement described by the U.S. president. No public statements outlined a joint monitoring or enforcement mechanism, nor a specific duration for the ceasefire.
