Smaller rooftop arrays dominated the number of installations, while larger projects contributed significantly to the overall capacity growth.
Attention now shifts to the upcoming plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. These rules permit approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket, with qualifying devices delivering no more than 800 watts of alternating current. They must adhere to Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely within the local distribution network. Batteries and devices that store imported household electricity are excluded from these regulations.
Safety protocols oversee plug-in connection standards
This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The revision introduces a specific exception for generating equipment plugs, requiring each to be certified by a notified body confirming compliance with BS 1363 standards. While product approval is valid across the UK, the electricity safety changes specifically cover England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification stipulates criteria for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, observing stable operation and no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal issues. The research highlighted differences in export control, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, contributing to the development of the UK safety standard for market approval.
Retailers prepare for the new approved products
The government’s consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. More than 85% supported the interim specification, with most endorsing the plug regulation. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Concerns raised involved older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Some also emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retail chains such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are preparing to introduce these new products. The format offers an alternative solution for households unable to use conventional rooftop systems, including renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing this new connection method cannot be legally operated before August 27. Starting from that date, only approved devices within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets. The June total capacity excludes systems designed for the new plug-in framework.
