Kangaroo Island Reports First Death of Endangered Australian Sea Lion Due to Bird Flu Outbreak

ADELAIDE / RankWire.AI / – South Australian authorities have confirmed the first fatality of an endangered Australian sea lion caused by H5N1 avian influenza. The carcass was found at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, which hosts the third-largest colony of the species, representing about five percent of its total population. As the virus threatens this species, wildlife officials are increasing surveillance in key pinniped breeding areas.

The South Australia Department for Environment and Water announced that lab tests confirmed a strong positive for H5 avian influenza. Environment Minister Emily Bourke explained that although the sea lion had been healing from a shark wound sustained three months earlier, post-mortem diagnostics revealed the viral infection was the main cause of death. She added that the animal’s weakened immune system during recovery probably made it more susceptible to the virus.

This event heightens worries about the conservation of the species, which is endemic to Australia with a global estimate of 10,000 to 12,000 individuals. About 80 percent of the remaining population lives in South Australia, where coastal colonies had already been experiencing an annual decline of roughly two percent prior to the virus’s emergence.

Australian Sea Lion’s First Fatality from Bird Flu on Kangaroo Island’s Shoreline

Following this case, wildlife officials launched targeted measures at Seal Bay. Over 400 sea lion pups received hookworm treatments to improve their immune health, while efforts to trap feral cats aimed to reduce transmission risks within the colony. In response to the outbreak, authorities are collaborating with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to investigate participation in international trials for experimental mammalian vaccines.

This case signifies an expansion of the H5N1 strain into Australian marine mammals, following a confirmed instance in a long-nosed fur seal at Beachport on the Limestone Coast. Researchers from Charles Darwin University previously warned of potential mortality events among local seal populations, comparing these to mass die-offs observed in pinniped colonies in South America and sub-Antarctic regions.

Biosecurity Measures Enforced at Coastal Reserves by Wildlife Authorities

More than 290 cases of H5 avian influenza have been confirmed in wild bird and mammal species across South Australia, accounting for over half of the total cases nationwide. While no additional sea lion deaths have been reported at Seal Bay, rangers continue heightened vigilance.

Monitoring efforts by state and federal wildlife agencies are ongoing across island sanctuaries and mainland haul-out sites. Disease control strategies, mortality data, and biosecurity protocols are accessible through official government portals as teams work to safeguard vulnerable marine populations.
