Wildfires across France and Spain Displace Nearly 260,000 Near Tourist Hotspots

Bordeaux, France / EuroWire / – Extensive wildfires raging through southwestern France and the Iberian Peninsula have prompted the evacuation of close to 260,000 residents and tourists from key leisure areas. Driven by consecutive heatwaves, arid land, and erratic wind changes, these fires have affected coastal zones near Bordeaux and rural regions west of Madrid. In response, emergency authorities in both countries declared critical levels of alert as thick smoke clouds disrupted major regional transport routes and led to the closure of several resort areas. Local officials confirmed that prolonged extreme temperatures created severe fire conditions, resulting in widespread evacuation orders to protect public safety.

In France, authorities ordered mass evacuations across Gironde after flames approached popular holiday destinations along the Atlantic coast. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that about 200,000 individuals were moved into temporary shelters, describing the effort as potentially the largest civilian evacuation in peacetime in France’s history. The French government mobilized 1,500 military personnel from the French Armed Forces to assist emergency services on the ground. Additionally, military aircraft, including an Airbus A400M Atlas equipped for water drops, were deployed to help combat fires in remote forested areas.

Authorities in southwestern France ordered the gradual evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula as fires destroyed thousands of hectares of coastal pine forest. The Gironde Prefecture confirmed that emergency responders set up temporary reception centers inside exhibition halls in Bordeaux to accommodate evacuees. Medical assistance, temporary housing, and protective masks were provided to those affected by the smoke drifting from the fires. Firefighting teams received reinforcements from the Paris Fire Brigade, along with aerial firefighting units supplied by European partner countries, to support the overstretched regional crews.

Meanwhile, in Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the affected fire zones west of Madrid, where multiple fires merged into a single large wildfire. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that over 60,000 residents and tourists were evacuated from towns within the Madrid region. Specialized units from the Military Emergencies Unit were deployed to establish firebreaks around vulnerable communities. In eastern Spain, authorities reported one death near Valencia after a wildfire spread across rural farmland, leading to additional local evacuations.

Deployment of Military and Aerial Firefighting Resources

Relief efforts from the European Civil Protection Mechanism increased as both countries requested aerial firefighting aid. Aircraft from Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands arrived to perform water drops in high-risk zones in Spain. France also received support in the form of heavy lift helicopters and aircraft from Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The European Forest Fire Information System reported that the total burned areas across EU member states set historic records during this summer season.

The wildfires have displaced nearly 260,000 people near popular tourist sites in France and Spain during peak summer travel, causing disruptions to regional rail and road networks. International travel advisories, issued by various diplomatic entities, urged travelers to stay informed through local news and follow safety instructions. Several coastal resorts reported significant cancellations as access to forested parks and mountain trails was restricted by local authorities. Emergency teams continue creating containment lines and monitoring weather forecasts for possible wind shifts.

Heavy-Lift Aircraft Deployed for Water Bombing Operations

Both nations’ emergency agencies maintained 24/7 monitoring as firefighting crews worked to safeguard critical infrastructure and residential areas. In major urban centers like Madrid and Bordeaux, health authorities issued air quality warnings, advising vulnerable populations to stay indoors with windows closed because of the heavy smoke. Local logistics teams are distributing emergency supplies, clean drinking water, and hygiene kits at shelters. Officials reaffirmed that firefighting operations will continue until weather conditions stabilize and all fire perimeters are fully contained.
